Duke’s Famous Hula Pie Recipe – It’s easy to make your own version of the classic macadamia nut ice cream pie with no-churn homemade ice cream, an Oreo cookie crust, and decadent fudge sauce topping!

Why We Love This Copycat Dukes Hula Pie Recipe
Hula Pie is a decadent macadamia nut ice cream pie resting in an Oreo crumb pie crust, and slathered with layers of hot fudge, whipped cream, and roasted macadamia nuts.
Do I have your attention now?
This pie was originally created at Kimoโs restaurant in Maui, but was made popular by the Dukeโs restaurant chain all throughout Hawaii and in California as well. We recently had it on a vacation to Maui at the Hula Grill, one of Dukeโs sister restaurants in Old Lahaina Town.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe, Too!
Most people do not own an ice cream maker, and macadamia nut ice cream is hard to come by at the grocery store. Therefore, weโve made a cheater version of no-churn ice cream using whipped heavy cream and sweetened condensed milk as the base. Then we stirred in chopped roasted macadamia nuts and a little bit of nut extract as well. The result is fabulous quick-made ice cream without an ice cream maker.
Also, we made our Oreo cookie crust from scratch. However, if youโre in a hurry feel free to buy an Oreo crust at the grocery store.
This cold and chocolatey no-bake dessert is always a hit at summertime celebrations, if you are able to share. Make it the day before the festivities and be sure to save yourself an extra slice (or two) before serving to your soon-to-be happy guests!
Ingredients You Need
For the Oreo Pie Crust
- Oreo cookies – or another brand of chocolate creme sandwich cookies

- Vanilla extract – a bit to highlight the sweetness

- Thick hot fudge sauce – store-bought chocolate fudge or homemade

How to Make Duke’s Hula Ice Cream Pie
First, set out a large food processor and add the Oreo cookies.
Grind into a fine crumb. Then add the melted butter and pulse until the mixture comes together.
Do NOT over-mix! The texture should be slightly rough like sand, not overly mushy like dough.
Dump the Oreo cookie crumbs into a 9-inch pie pan. Use a drinking glass to press the cookie crumbs across the bottom and up the sides of the pan. Refrigerate the crust until ready to use.
Next, make the no-churn macadamia nut ice cream. Set out a stand mixer, or a large bowl and a hand mixer. Pour 2 ยฝ cups of cold heavy cream into the bowl. Using a whip attachment, beat the cream at high speed until it forms very-firm whipped cream with stiff peaks.ย
Fold in the sweetened condensed milk, vanilla, and nut extract. Fold gently with a spatula until well combined. Then fold in 1 cup of chopped macadamia nuts.

Scoop the ice cream mixture into the prepared pie crust, mounding it high in the center. Freeze the pie for 2 to 3 hours, until rock hard.
Once the ice cream is solid, scoop (or squirt) 10 ounces of fudge sauce on top of the pie. Spread the fudge over the surface covering the ice cream.
Sprinkle the remaining ยฝ cup macadamia nuts over the top of the pie, then freeze again for at least 1 hour.
Tips & Tricks
- Let the pie sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes before slicing into it!
- For even easier cutting, use a warmed knife. Take a large chef’s knife and dip it in a pitcher of warm water, dry off with a towel, and cut. Then you can dip it into the water between cuts, too!
- While the pie sets up in the freezer, be sure to cover it with plastic wrap!
Serving Suggestions
When ready to serve, garnish the edges of the pie crust with whipped cream. You can either use canned whip cream or pipe extra homemade whip cream around the edges.
Slice the pie into tall large wedges. Then heat the remaining 6 ounces of fudge sauce and drizzle the hot fudge over each piece before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions
Like the traditional Duke’s Hula Pie, this copycat recipe is made with a chocolate cookie crust, macadamia nut ice cream, and a hot fudge topping with chopped nuts.
Definitely! If you prefer to skip making your own ice cream, you can use store-bought ice cream instead. Since it is hard to find macadamia nut ice cream, I recommend using vanilla ice cream. You will lose some of the flavor but the added nuts on top will help!
Cover the pie carefully with plastic wrap and a layer of aluminum foil. Hula pie will keep well in the freezer for up to 2 months.
