How To Broil Salmon in the Oven

First, turn the oven on to broil and set the top rack so that it’s about 6 inches from the top of the oven.

Prepare the salmon by cutting into 6 large or 8 small equal portions. Place onto a rimmed baking sheet, and gently pat the tops of each filet with a towel to remove any moisture.

Use a pastry brush to lightly coat each filet with oil, and sprinkle generously with salt and pepper.

Broil the salmon for 5 to 8 minutes, until lightly golden around the edges of each filet. It’s definitely better to slightly undercook than overcook the fish!

How to Make Garlic Herb Butter for Broiled Salmon

While the salmon filets broil in the oven, make the Garlic Herb Butter in just 3 simple steps:

  1. Chop the parsley and dill, and mince the garlic.
  2. Melt the butter in a microwave-safe mixing cup.
  3. Add the fresh herbs and lemon juice to the melted butter, and mix well.

Once the salmon comes out of the oven, brush the tops with a generous amount of the homemade Garlic Herb Butter.

Recipe Variations

We love the bright flavors from using chopped parsley and dill. However, you can definitely change up the seasonings to suite your tastes!

Swap the parsley and dill with fresh lemongrass, rosemary, tarragon, or even lemon zest. You can also use dried herbs and seasoning blends, like lemon pepper seasoning, in place of fresh herbs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you know when broiled salmon is done?

Cooked salmon goes from bright pink to very light pink and opaque. It will flake easily with a fork but should still be medium-rare in the center.

Is it ok for salmon to be pink in the middle?

Yes, properly cooked salmon can be pink in the middle. The internal temperature of fish needs to reach at least 135 degrees to be safe to eat… So to be sure, I suggest using a meat thermometer to test the fish for doneness.

How long do leftovers keep well?

While this dish is best to enjoy when freshly prepared, leftovers will keep well for up to 3 days. Transfer cooled leftover salmon to a sealed container and store in the refrigerator.
