When it comes to grilling, nothing levels up a meal like the addition of tasty smokiness. I love smoking everything from beef and pork to fish and cheese — if you can grill it, you can probably smoke it!

Reviews of The Best Smoker Grill Combos

1. What I Use: Traeger Pro 575

Traeger Pro 575
Credit: Amazon

If you’re looking for a smoker grill that has a smaller footprint with plenty of cooking space, this model is a winner. I have the Traeger Pro 575 and love it — it’s the best pellet smoker grill combo because of its amazing versatility: it grills, smokes, bakes, roasts, braises, AND barbecues.

There are 575 square inches of cooking space, which means it can fit up to 24 burgers or five-rib racks, making it super easy to host a backyard party or cook for a crowd.

Plus, I absolutely LOVE that you can set it up and leave it, thanks to its wireless tech. All you have to do is download the app and connect it to the grill since it works with the included meat probes. This means you can set and adjust temperatures, monitor cooking, and receive notifications when your food is ready to eat, all while spending time with your guests!

MY TIPS: You can use different wood pellet varieties to infuse different flavors. We love making smoked brisket, smoked queso dip and smoked pork butt with our Traeger.

The Specs:

  • Fuel Type: Pellet
  • Dimensions: 53 x 41 x 27 inches
  • Weight: 149 pounds
  • Fuel Capacity: 18 pounds
  • Built-in Thermometer: Yes
  • Max Temp: 500 degrees F

  • Easy to assemble and use
  • Built-in fan
  • Included meat probes

  • Large capacity

The Cons:

  • Can be difficult to clean

Buy the Traeger Pro 575:

2. Best Charcoal Smoker Grill Combo: Kamado Joe Classic Joe Grill Series II

Kamado Joe Classic Joe Grill Series II
Credit: Williams Sonoma

Charcoal is a classic choice for grilling and smoking since it offers a distinct, smoky flavor. This Kamado Joe charcoal smoker grill is on the smaller side, but it’s a good option for those with less backyard space.

The Classic Joe II can grill, smoke, roast, sear and bake and fits up to 13 burgers or two pork butts across 250 square inches of cooking space. It also has a two-tier system to cook foods at different temperatures, which is why it received my pick as the best charcoal smoker grill combo.

The Specs:

  • Fuel Type: Charcoal
  • Dimensions: 48.5 x 46.5 x 30.1 inches
  • Weight: 231 pounds
  • Fuel Capacity: 6 pounds
  • Built-in Thermometer: Yes
  • Max Temp: 750 degrees F

The Pros:

  • Easy to clean
  • Easy to control smoke and temperature
  • Comes with cart, grate gripper, and ash-cleaning tool

Buy the Kamado Joe Classic Joe Grill Series II:

3. Best Gas Smoker Grill Combo: Pit Boss Sportsman

Pit Boss Sportsman
Credit: Amazon

Gas-powered smokers require wood pellets to infuse smoky flavor since gas is flavorless. However, from a temperature perspective, gas grills are great because they can maintain consistent temperatures and don’t require reloading fuel or stoking fires.

This model from Pit Boss can grill, smoke, roast, bake, braise, barbecue, char-grill, AND sear. It even has a whopping 1,261 square inches of cooking space, but it’s worth noting that it’s split between the grill side and the pellet side. This means that if you’re just grilling or just smoking, your space will be a bit more limited.

Otherwise, it has a temperature range of 185 to 500 degrees F and comes with two meat probes.

The Specs:

  • Fuel Type: Propane/pellet
  • Dimensions: 50.17 x 69.54 x 31.69 inches
  • Weight: 204 pounds
  • Fuel Capacity: 21 pounds
  • Built-in Thermometer: Yes
  • Max Temp: 500 degrees F

The Pros:

  • Dual-fuel flexibility
  • Pellet hopper has window to check levels
  • Easy to use
  • 8-in-1 functionality

The Cons:

  • Separate cooking chambers
  • Heavy

Buy the Pit Boss Sportsman:

4. Best Electric Smoker Grill Combo: Ninja Woodfire Connect Pro Outdoor Grill and Smoker

Ninja Woodfire Connect Pro Outdoor Grill and Smoker
Credit: Target

For someone who just wants a small electric smoker grill that’s on the beginner’s side, this model from Ninja is a solid pick. It can grill, smoke, air fry, bake, roast, broil, and dehydrate, and it has a small hopper for wood pellets when you want to add flavor to meats. You even receive two pellet blends to get started!

It can fit two racks of ribs, six steaks, three pounds of wings, a 9-pound brisket, or 30 hot dogs, so you can prepare meals for a week or feed a small group. It also comes with an air fryer basket so you can crisp up some fries or roast veggies to go with your barbecue, along with an adjustable outdoor stand and detachable side table.

The Specs:

  • Fuel Type: Electric
  • Dimensions: 13.31 x 18.58 x 23.62 inches
  • Weight: 30.6 pounds
  • Fuel Capacity: 1/2 cup
  • Built-in Thermometer: Yes
  • Max Temp: Not stated

The Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Portable
  • Comes with air fry basket

The Cons:

  • Small cooking area

What Others Are Saying:

Homes and Gardens and Food Network both reviewed and loved this Ninja smoker grill combo.

5. Best Budget Smoker Grill Combo: Royal Gourmet Charcoal Offset Smoker and Grill

Royal Gourmet Charcoal Offset Smoker and Grill
Credit: Amazon

This smoker grill combo is perfect for beginner grillers who aren’t ready to invest in a super expensive model. It’s straightforward since it just grills and smokes, while the 811-square inch cooking area is split between the main grilling chamber and an offset smoking chamber. It also comes with front and side tables, hooks, and a bottom storage rack so you can prep your ingredients right where you’re grilling.

The Specs:

  • Fuel Type: Charcoal
  • Dimensions: 48.82 x 53.39 x 27.95 inches
  • Weight: 53.3 pounds
  • Fuel Capacity: 4.4 pounds
  • Built-in Thermometer: Yes
  • Max Temp: Not stated

The Pros:

  • Good entry-level grill and smoker
  • Basic design
  • Front and side tables

The Cons:

  • Some reviews reported that the temperature control wasn’t the best

Buy the Royal Gourmet Charcoal Offset Smoker and Grill:

Other Smoker Grill Combos I Considered

This smoker grill combo can grill, smoke, roast and bake, even in winter climates without compromising thermal capacity. It’s similar to the Kamado Joe that I chose for the best charcoal smoker grill, but at a higher price point and without the cart and side shelves, which are available at an additional cost. The Big Green Egg Large Grill Smoker is available at .

Masterbuilt Gravity Series 800

If you’re looking for a charcoal grill that can also smoke, sear, and roast, this model delivers. It has some nice features, including a built-in temperature gauge, digital fan to maintain temperatures, and a WiFi app to set and control temps. All in all, it’s comparable to similar models on the list, but the sticking point for me was the limited reviews. The Masterbuilt Gravity Series 800 is available at Home Depot for $697.

Weber SmokeFire EX4 Wood Fired Pellet Grill

For a wood-pellet-fired grill and smoker, this model is good at a number of things: It can grill, smoke, sear and bake, and it comes with some nice features like an ash and grease drawer, two meat probes, and hooks to keep your grilling tools organized. It’s compatible with a WiFi app and reviewers say it’s easy to use and the quality is good, but some reported that the fire goes out easily. The Weber SmokeFire EX4 Wood Fired Pellet Grill is available at Amazon for $908.28.

This model is a blend of some of my favorite models above: it’s fired by wood pellets and has an offset smoker. It grills, sears, and smokes, and it has some nice cleaning and storage features. However, reviews are mixed — people either love it or hate it. Some savvy users have made modifications to get the grill to perform exactly how they want it to, but it’s better to be able to use it right out of the box without alterations. The Oklahoma Joe’s Longhorn Offset Smoker is available at

For a compact smoker grill, this model has a large cooking area at 811 square inches. The smoke box can take wood pellets, chunks, chips, and even charcoal, which is different from the other models included in my list. It can smoke, grill, and roast, but if you want to sear you have to purchase an additional attachment. This model is already expensive without extras, so it just didn’t rise to the top of the list for me. The Camp Chef Woodwind 24 is available at

Ninja Woodfire Connect Pro XL Outdoor Grill and Smoker

Apartment dwellers and tech-savvy folks will appreciate this electric grill/smoker combo. It’s similar to the Ninja model that made our best-of list, but I favored its simplicity and slightly smaller size in comparison to this one. I know apartments often have limited storage space, so it’ll probably be hard to find a spot to stash this model when it’s not in use, too. The Ninja Woodfire Connect Pro XL Outdoor Grill and Smoker is available at Walmart for $397.

ZGrills Backyard Warrior

This is another smoker grill that combines some of my best-of-picks: It’s essentially a budget-friendly version of the Traeger Pro 575 wood-pellet-fired grill. It has nice features and can smoke, sear, bake, BBQ, grill, braise, roast and char-grill, but it doesn’t get hot enough for some backyard chefs’ needs, maxing out at just 450 degrees F. The ZGrills Backyard Warrior is available at Amazon for $529.

Why You Can Trust Us

Credit: A Spicy Perspective

Hi! I’m Sommer, a professional food writer, recipe developer, food stylist, photographer, and resident cookery queen here at A Spicy Perspective. Good ol’ American comfort food is one of my favorite types of cuisine, and nothing fits the bill better than perfectly smoked meats with all the fixings.

We’ve had two Traegers smoker grills. We loved our first, but it was a larger model, so we went all in on a smaller one to save space on the patio. What I love about our current Traeger, the Pro 575, is the WiFi app that lets me set it and forget it and get notifications when proper temps are hit. This way I can go about other food prep or spend time with my family while meats slowly cook to perfection on the grill. When it’s time to eat, we love how the smoky flavor adds dimension to our meals.

To create my list of the best smoker grill combos, I looked up other popular brands and models. From there, I scoured through customer ratings and reviews and considered a few key factors like temperature control, fuel capacity, and how easy it is to clean (that’s a big one in my book!).

What to Know About Smoker Grills

best smoker grill combos
Credit: A Spicy Perspective

Things to Consider When Choosing a Smoker Grill Combo

The best BBQ grill and smoker combo is one you’re excited to cook with as often as possible. Maybe even to the point where you’ll head outside to grill and BBQ regardless of the weather! It doesn’t need a ton of fancy features, but there are a few basic elements that you should keep in mind:

  1. Easy temperature control using a built-in thermometer, meat probes and built-in fans. The best grilling and smoking means setting up your foods and walking away, disturbing them as little as possible. Every time you open the lid you lose precious heat. These features make it so easy to monitor and adjust without even opening the lid.
  2. Fuel capacity is important because perfectly smoked meats that are tender and juicy require a long cook at low temperatures. If you’re smoking something for extra long, having to top off your fuel midway can mess with your temperatures and throw off the entire cooking process.
  3. Easy clean-up, both in terms of cleaning the grill grates and drip plates, as well as clearing out ashes from pellets or charcoal. If cleaning is really hard to do, you’re probably going to avoid using your smoker grill!
  4. Space limitations and placement of your smoker grill combo make a difference. If you have a small patio, you might not want to invest in a massive grill that eats up a ton of space for living and entertaining. Also, because a smoker will generate more smoke than a regular grill, placing it next to windows or fabric outdoor furniture can lead to smoky smells and residues where you don’t want them.

Are Smoker Grill Combos Worth It?

If you already love grilling and want to level up your game with smoked foods, a smoker grill combo is absolutely worth it, in my opinion. This is an upgrade that still lets you do regular grilling with the added benefit of smoking and, depending on the brand and model, other cooking capabilities like braising, baking (homemade pizza, anyone? *wink*), and more.

How to Use a Smoker Grill Combo

best smoker grill combos
Credit: A Spicy Perspective

Here are some of my tips for getting the best results when using a smoker grill combo:

  • Cook slowly on low heat: This is to infuse the smoky flavor without drying your meat out
  • Use a water tray: It will help keep meat moist and help you to resist the urge to open the smoker and check results.
  • Leave the lid on for as long as possible: It’s kind of similar to using a slow cooker. This is why it’s nice to have meat probes and WiFi apps to use, since they make it easier to monitor progress and temperatures, and adjust without opening the lid.

What’s the Easiest Meat to Cook in Smoker?

Beef ribs, pork chops, and turkey are some of the easier meats to cook in a smoker. Beef ribs top the list thanks to their fat content and tenderness, while pork chops don’t require intense cooking to nail the texture, and turkey can cook to perfection in just two hours with the help of plenty of butter to prevent drying out.

The process of cooking paella is nearly as famous as the fare itself, so to properly prepare this traditional Spanish dish, you’ll want one of the best paella pans. Although it’s possible to cook this flavorful array of meat, seafood, vegetables, and saffron rice in a large skillet (I’ve also made it in a sheet pan when I’m in a hurry), traditional paella pans are your best bet. This is because the shape of the pan allows liquid to evaporate with ease and gives the paella that desired crisp base.

The best paella pans have a traditional design that’s wide, shallow, round, and has two handles on each side. If you’re in the market for the perfect pan to prepare this dish with, check out this list of the best paella pans, including my favorite from Garcima.

My Top Picks:

  1. Best Overall Paella Pan: Garcima 16-Inch Carbon Steel Paella Pan – $34.19 at Amazon
  2. Best Carbon Steel Paella Pan: Machika Carbon Steel Paella Pan – $19.99 at Amazon
  3. Best Paella Pan for Induction: All-Clad D3 Stainless Steel Weeknight Pan – $179.95 at Williams Sonoma
  4. Best Nonstick Paella Pan: Sol Carbon Steel Non-Stick Paella Pan – $28.08 at Amazon

Reviews of The Best Paella Pans

1. Best Overall Paella Pan: Garcima 16-Inch Carbon Steel Paella Pan

Garcima 16-Inch Carbon Steel Paella Pan
Credit: Amazon

If you want a pan that’s as authentic as the dish you’re cooking, the Garcima Carbon Steel Paella Pan is a great pick. Made in a family-owned pan factory in Valencia, Spain, the carbon steel material and shallow makeup are the ingredients for a classic paella pan.

Whether you’re cooking in your oven, on the stovetop, or the grill, your rice will cook evenly because the shallow design allows for the thin layer of liquid to absorb into the rice. Since the carbon steel design is great for conducting heat, you’ll get the sought-after crust everyone longs for in their favorite paella.

While traditional paella is the obvious recipe to try out in this pan, I also recommend making my Shrimp Jambalaya in it!

The Specs

  • Material: Carbon steel
  • Stovetop Compatibility: Gas and electric
  • Size: 16 inches
  • Servings: Up to 6 large servings

The Pros:

  • Made in Spain
  • Durable
  • Oven safe
  • Can be used in the oven and on the grill

The Cons:

  • Not dishwasher safe
  • Can’t be used for induction
  • Doesn’t have a nonstick coating

What Others Are Saying

Food & Wine named the Garcima Carbon Steel Paella Pan the best carbon steel pan of 2024 and Good Housekeeping called it the best eye candy.

Buy the Garcima 16-Inch Carbon Steel Paella Pan:

2. Best Carbon Steel Paella Pan: Machika Carbon Steel Paella Pan

Machika Carbon Steel Paella Pan
Credit: Amazon

The Machika Carbon Steel Paella Pan is one of my top picks for a smaller-sized carbon steel pan (its diameter is 3 inches less than the Garcima). Carbon steel tends to be the best material to cook paella in because of its optimal heat conduction, but there are other features I love about it too.

The built-in handles on either side are super convenient, while the tiny dimples at the bottom of the hand make sure your paella cooks evenly every time. It can also be used with several different types of heat, including gas burners, open fire, and gas stovetops, however, it’s not oven-safe.

The Specs

  • Material: Polished carbon steel
  • Stovetop Compatibility: Gas
  • Size: 13 inches
  • Servings: Up to 6

The Pros:

  • Made with durable carbon steel
  • Suitable for gas burners and open fires
  • Inexpensive

The Cons:

  • Can’t be used for induction
  • Hand wash only
  • Not oven-safe

What Others Are Saying

The Machika Carbon Steel Paella Pan has a 4.2-star rating with more than 2,300 Amazon reviews.

3. Best Paella Pan for Induction: All-Clad D3 Stainless Steel Weeknight Pan

All-Clad is often regarded as one of the top cookware brands on the market, and I agree. The stainless steel material and 4-quart size of this pan make it perfect for meals for a smaller family size. Its wide surface area and rounded sides allow you to make foods like paella that require a good amount of stirring without having to worry about spills.

The pan is compatible with any stovetop (including induction!) and can be placed in an oven or broiler up to 600°F. It’s great for cooking more than just paella and can be used for other dishes like my green risotto recipe, too!

The Specs

  • Material: Stainless steel
  • Stovetop Compatibility: All cooktops, including induction
  • Size: 12.75 inches
  • Servings: Not stated, but best for smaller families

The Pros:

  • Induction capable
  • Oven safe
  • Can heat up to 600°F
  • Stainless steel
  • Handles are heat-resistant

The Cons:

  • Hand wash only
  • Heavier than other pans (over 6 pounds)
  • Smaller size

4. Best Nonstick Paella Pan: Sol Carbon Steel Non-Stick Paella Pan

Sol Carbon Steel Non-Stick Paella Pan
Credit: Amazon

If you’re big into cooking but rely heavily on non-stick pans, this Sol Carbon Steel Non-Stick Paella Pan may be the best pick for you. Crafted with durable and resilient heavy-duty carbon steel, this pan is classic in makeup but has a modern twist, thanks to the PFOA-free non-stick coating.

When you’re finished cooking, the coating allows your food to slide right off the pan and onto your plate. Then, you can throw it straight into the dishwasher for easy cleanup — no soaking required! It is also suitable for electric, gas, and induction cooktops and even stays safe up to 450 degrees F in the oven.

The Specs

  • Material: Carbon steel
  • Stovetop Compatibility: Gas, electric, induction
  • Size: 16 inches
  • Servings: Not stated, but I’d estimate about 6 servings

The Pros:

  • Non-stick coating
  • Gas, electric, and induction compatible
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Very large size

The Cons:

  • There may be some spots that get warmer than others

While this pick isn’t your classic carbon steel option, its sleek design, non-stick coating, and durable enamel steel make it a great choice for everything from braising to sauteing.

The 22-inch size makes enough for a whopping 16 servings (so it’s great for get-togethers with friends and family), and it’s suitable to use on a variety of cooktops like grills, paella burners, open fires, stove tops, and ovens! Once you’re done, wash it gently with a sponge and lay it out to air dry.

The Specs

  • Material: Enamel-coated Steel
  • Stovetop Compatibility: All except induction
  • Size: 22 inches
  • Servings: Up to 16

The Pros:

  • Non-stick enamel coating
  • Rust proof
  • Huge capacity

The Cons:

  • Not dishwasher safe
  • Not induction compatible

Other Paella Pans to Consider

Staub Enameled Cast Iron Paella Pan

This Staub option is loved for its durability and is large enough to cook meals for the entire family. However, there are some major drawbacks to this pan: It can fade in the dishwasher, and the enamel construction means you probably won’t get the caramelized and crispy socarrat like you would with traditional paella. Plus, it’s heavy! Coupled with the expensive price point, as a paella pan, it just didn’t make the cut. The Staub Enameled Cast Iron Paella Pan is available at Williams Sonoma for $280.

Garcima Pata Negra Restaurant Grade Paella Pan

This one is definitely worth looking into if you want a traditional pick made in Spain. The straight-to-the-point design is made with carbon steel and is oven-, gas-, and electric-stovetop compatible. With that said, the pan itself doesn’t have a lot of frills, and when I compared the almost $80 price tag with other options, this seemed to be a little more expensive than it was worth. The Garcima Pata Negra Restaurant Grade Paella Pan is available at Amazon for $73.38

Cuisinart Non-Stick Paella Pan

If you dread cooking without a non-stick pan, the Cuisinart Non-Stick Paella Pan is the perfect choice for you. The nonstick coating and cool grip stainless steel handles make cooking a breeze. However, some Amazon reviews claim the pan doesn’t cook large meals evenly. The Cuisinart Non-Stick Paella Pan is available at Amazon for $55.99

Why You Can Trust Me

Hi, I’m Sommer, and I’m the founder of A Spicy Perspective! I’m a professional food writer, photographer, food stylist, and recipe developer, and I adore making foods with a nostalgic twist that brings me back to past memories, including places I’ve traveled. I love trying out recipes from around the world and making traditional dishes my own. A few of my favorites include my Fluffy Yellow Rice and Easy Spanish Rice recipes!

When I was creating my list, I looked at the options I love and what qualities made them unique to me. With this in mind, I researched beloved brands and highly-rated products, taking material, price, and ratings into account, along with features that are particularly helpful when cooking paella (like size, materials, and handle).

What to Know About Paella Pans

Things to Consider When Choosing a Paella Pans

Material

Paella pans come in a variety of materials, particularly carbon steel, cast iron, and stainless steel. While some people claim the makeup doesn’t matter nearly as much as the rice you’re using and how you prepare the dish, I’ve found that traditional carbon steel creates the beautiful crust people love in their paella. However, some materials are dishwasher-safe while others require handwashing, so it’ll ultimately depend on your preferences.

Also, it’s important to note that not all materials are compatible with all stovetops. The type of heat you use is really going to depend on each individual pan. While some options can be used on a gas or electric stove, as well as an outdoor grill, others are a little more fickle. Make sure you double-check the manufacturer’s instructions before using.

Size and Capacity

Similar to risotto in Italy, paella is made to feed a lot of mouths. Most recipes call for about two cups of rice, so you’ll need at least a 14-inch pan, if not bigger. Keep in mind that most standard ovens can’t fit anything larger than 17 or 18 inches, so if you need a bigger pan, make sure it’s safe to cook on an outdoor grill.

Cleaning

Traditional paella pans are made with carbon steel. Much like cast iron, carbon steel should never be cleaned with soap, harsh chemicals, or scouring pads and scrubbers. With this, you need to clean this material with warm water and a soft rag.

How to Season a Paella Pan

To season, follow these steps:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F
  2. Clean the pan with warm water and soap, then make sure to dry completely
  3. Using a paper towel, coat the pan with oil (vegetable is a good option)
  4. Bake in the oven upside down for an hour
  5. When the hour is up, turn the oven off, and let it cool inside
  6. Remove and wipe away any excess oil

What is Special About a Paella Pan?

Credit: A Spicy Perspective

They were handcrafted with this dish in mind. They are shallow to allow for maximal surface area while the traditional carbon steel heats evenly so you can get the perfect crispy crust every time. Plus, since you can cook so much more than just paella in them, they should be a staple in every kitchen!

What is a Good Alternative to a Paella Pan?

A deep, wide, and shallow stainless steel option is a great alternative to traditional carbon steel. It heats evenly, just like a traditional pan, and the material allows for the caramelized crust (which is one of the best parts of the dish!).

Are Paella Pans Worth It?

If you regularly cook paella or dishes that require a large surface area and depth, one of these pieces is definitely worth the investment. However, if you plan to try the recipe once, you can get by with a deep or shallow stainless steel alternative (like this recipe that uses a sheet pan to make it!)

Why is it Important Not to Stir Paella?

Not stirring after the stock is added is the golden rule of paella. In my book, the crispy golden crust is the most delicious part of the entire dish. If you are constantly stirring it, you’ll lose out on the chance for it to form.

Air fryers are one of my favorite appliances to use in the kitchen. In fact, my air fryer has been a staple in my home for years for amazing, family-friendly snacks, dinners, and lunches. And, if you use yours just as much as I do, you may want to upgrade to one of the best dual air fryers. They’re a slightly upgraded version of your classic air fryer and tend to have a larger capacity, along with two separate drawers so you can quickly warm, cook, or prepare proteins, veggies, and more.

Other Dual Air Fryers to Consider

Beautiful 9 QT TriZone Air Fryer

Dual air fryers are the best option for people who like to cook multiple things at once. But if you want a larger capacity air fryer without the added dual-zone feature, this one was made with aesthetics in mind. However, despite its sleek, pretty design, reviewers found that it’s not the most long-lasting pick available, especially for the midrange price point. The Beautiful 9 QT TriZone Air Fryer is available at Walmart for $139.

Gourmia 10-Qt. Dual Basket Digital Air Fryer

This 10-quart dual basket digital air fryer can cook two separate meals at different temps and times. It also has seven preset cooking functions and two dishwasher-safe baskets. That being said, it doesn’t have a ton of reviews online, so it’s hard to consider the quality or longevity of this model — but given the limited positive reviews, it seems to be a contender. The Gourmia 10-Qt. Dual Basket Digital Air Fryer is available at Target for $99.99.

Frigidaire 8 Qt Digital Dual Zone Air Fryer

This versatile air fryer comes with functions to dehydrate, ferment, stew, convection, and warm. It is large enough to cook multiple items at once and it also claims to be space-saving, but it still has a large capacity of 8 quarts, so I can’t imagine it’s small enough for a tiny kitchen. Plus, it doesn’t have a ton of reviews so it’s hard to tell if it is well-liked. The Frigidaire 8 Qt Digital Dual Zone Air Fryer is available at Amazon for $176.40.

Ninja 10 Quart 6-in-1 DualZone XL 2-Basket Air Fryer

This Ninja air fryer has two 5-quart baskets that can help you cook larger amounts of food at the same time. It has 6 cooking programs so you can air fry, roast, bake, and more. While this is a great contender for one of the best dual air fryers, I personally prefer the Ninja 8-quart Foodi because of its slightly smaller capacity, meaning it’s a bit easier to store. The Ninja 10 Quart 6-in-1 DualZone XL 2-Basket Air Fryer is available at Amazon for $180.02.

Why You Can Trust Me

Hi, I’m Sommer! I’m the founder of A Spicy Perspective and a professional food writer, photographer, food stylist, and recipe developer. I adore making foods with a nostalgic twist that bring me back to past memories including places I’ve traveled. I love adding a twist to classic dishes, hence my many quick and easy air fryer recipes. (Some of my all-time favorites include my Keto-Friendly Turnip Fries and Air Fryer Meatloaf!)

To make my list of the best dual air fryers, I used my own knowledge of air fryers that I’ve used in the past. From there, I researched popular brands and models and considered factors like capacity, price, ratings, materials, and ease of cleaning.

What to Know About Dual Air Fryers

What to Consider Before Buying a Dual Air Fryer

Air fryers have become one of the most popular appliances in the kitchen. Known for their functionality and ease of use, they are perfect for making no-mess weeknight dinners in a jiffy. Here are some factors you should think about before buying one of the best dual air fryers.

Material: Dual air fryers come in an array of different materials like stainless steel, plastic, and various types of metal. Before purchasing an air fryer, you want to ensure you get one that fits your lifestyle and needs. If you want something long-lasting that will stand the test of time, most people prefer a stainless steel or metal option. However, plastic models can sometimes be a bit less expensive.

Air fryers can also come with different drawer styles, like the classic basket, dual baskets, or a sliding toaster oven.

Size: There are a ton of different sizes and capacities to choose from. Single air fryers can be as small as 2- or 3 quarts and get up to 16 quarts, but still only have one drawer. The dual air fryers we included in our list range from 8- to 25-quarts. And because dual air fryers usually come with two baskets, they can be a little bit bulkier than your average air fryer. If you use your air fryer several times a week and have a lot of mouths to feed, you may want to opt for an 8- or 10-quart air fryer. If you don’t use your air fryer very often and cook for one or two people, you might want to consider a single-basket machine.

Air Fryer Coating: Are you someone who needs low-maintenance kitchen appliances? Your best bet is to find an air fryer that has a nonstick coating. If you don’t want a nonstick coating you will be stuck using air fryer liners, and while these are great, they are an added expense. Finding an air fryer with a nonstick coating that is also dishwasher safe is the holy grail for individuals looking for an option that is both easy to clean and easy to maintain. Before purchasing make sure to look for both of these highlights.

Is a Dual Air Fryer Worth it?

If you have a large family or are a master meal prepper, a dual-basket air fryer will undoubtedly be your new best friend. The dual baskets and larger capacity can make it easier for you to cook more in a shorter period of time.

With that being said, if you don’t have the room for a larger air fryer, don’t use your air fryer very often, or only cook for yourself, you might want to opt for a classic air fryer instead of a dual one. Plus, because of the big capacity, dual air fryers tend to be on the more costly side.

How to Use a Ninja Dual Air Fryer

Most dual air fryers work the same, but the exact preparation needed will depend on the individual machine. While some air fryers, like the Ninja Foodi Air Fryer, do not need to preheat, you should always check the instructions on your machine before using it. When you are ready to cook in your Ninja air fryer, just select the length of time you need to cook the item as well as the temperature you need to cook it at.

How to Clean a Dual Air Fryer

Similar to the usage of your air fryer, cleaning your air fryer will depend on the machine you are using. For most air fryer baskets, you can simply place them in the dishwasher to clean them. For other air fryers, you may have to hand wash the baskets, which could be tough given all the nooks.

A good rule of thumb is to clean your air fryer after each use so you don’t have any messes. To do so, let your air fryer cool off before wiping the basket, heating chamber, and heating element down with soapy water. After you’re finished, wipe it down with water and let it dry before using it again.

Can You Put Foil in an Air Fryer?

Yes, you can use aluminum foil in your basket. In fact, I often use foil for a mess-free cleanup. If you do plan to use foil for ease of cleaning, there are a few rules you need to follow:

For starters, don’t let the foil touch the heating element, and make sure something is sitting on it so it doesn’t blow around while the machine is in use. Also, if foil comes in contact with acidic ingredients it could oxidize, so in the case of tomatoes or lemons, you’ll want to use paper liners

1. Overall Best Latte Machine: Mr. Coffee Prima Latte Luxe

Mr. Coffee Prima Latte Luxe
Credit: Amazon

This compact pick from Mr. Coffee offers a great overall value! The small but mighty semi-automatic machine can help you handcraft an espresso shot, latte, or cappuccino in minutes. You’re just a button and a short wait away from a tasty drink!

I love the one-touch control panel that’s located on the top right, which makes things a total breeze. Although it’s not the model I have in my own kitchen (more on that below), one of my favorite features is the versatile milk frother. Not only is it great for dairy milk, but it does a great job of steaming non-dairy ingredients, like oat or almond milk.

It’s definitely one of the best espresso latte machines I’ve found. While you do need to have a grinder for the beans or buy pre-ground, it also comes with a scoop and a tamper to help you prepare mess-free espresso shots each time. Plus, some parts are dishwasher-safe, which is a huge win!

The Specs:

  • Machine Type: Semi-automatic
  • Brewing Functions: One shot/two shot espresso, cappuccino, latte
  • Extra Features: Milk frother
  • Time to Heat: Not specified
  • Pressure Bars: Not published
  • Dimensions: 13.3 x 11.7 x 16 inches

The Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Digital progress bar display
  • Dishwasher safe parts
  • Froths non-dairy milk and creamers
  • Adjustable drip tray for different cup sizes
  • Small footprint takes up minimal counter space

The Cons:

  • Not fully automatic
  • Extra tall travel cups don’t fit
  • Plastic parts can feel flimsy

2. What’s In My Kitchen: Breville Oracle Touch

Breville Oracle Touch
Credit: Amazon

We’ve had this Breville latte machine for less than a year, and it’s already managed to become one of my favorite kitchen tools. As a super-automatic latte machine, it does all the heavy lifting for you, including grinding beans and dosing, but it still offers adjustments for personal preference, like the texture of your milk foam and the strength of your espresso shot.

You can also adjust the grind, concentration of the espresso, temperature of the water, and temperature of the steamed milk. I also love that it steams your milk instead of frothing it, so you get that super delicate, yummy microfoam you’d find at a coffee house! The quality is AMAZING!

While it’s definitely on the pricier side, I love that all my preferences can be saved so I can repeat my perfect latte every day. There are also a ton of different coffee settings to choose from, ranging from flat white to cappuccino.

My Tips:

I regularly use my latte machine to make Cubano coffee. I put turbinado sugar and a pinch of salt in the bottom of the mug. Then I make an extra-hot double espresso, and when the hot coffee hits the sugar in the mug it caramelizes a little. Then I swirl in steamed milk, and it’s perfect!

The Specs:

  • Machine Type: Super-automatic
  • Brewing Functions: One shot/two shot espresso, long black, latte, flat white, cappuccino, hot water
  • Extra Features: Bean grinder, automated grinds dispensing/tamping, milk steamer
  • Time to Heat: 3 seconds
  • Pressure Bars: 9
  • Dimensions: 15.4 x 14.7 x 17.8 inches

The Pros:

  • Easy to set up
  • Accessible for beginners
  • Great tasting espresso
  • Easy to clean
  • Customizable settings
  • Can save your personalized settings

The Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Some customers reported durability issues

3. Best Automatic Latte Machine: De’Longhi Dinamica Plus

De'Longhi Dinamica Plus
Credit: Amazon

This super automatic latte machine is a workhorse, making it one of the best automatic latte machines for the home. It has some incredible features, like an intuitive touchscreen, tons of brewing functions, and consistently positive reviews for its ease of use, maintenance, and delicious drinks.

Latte machines can get pretty expensive, but with all of the cool add-ons this one has — like the super-automatic functionality, built-in grinder, automatic ground dispensing, and milk steamer — this one is decently priced, especially in comparison to other models. But if you’re a daily latte drinker or love a large variety of espresso drinks (there are 15 brewing functions!), it more than pays for itself over time.

As a bonus, this latte machine also makes standard coffee in addition to rich espresso shots. This means that it can function as an all-in-one coffee machine, even when you have guests over who aren’t the biggest espresso fans.

The Specs:

  • Machine Type: Super-automatic
  • Brewing Functions: Espresso, coffee, long, doppio+, coffee pot, over ice, cappuccino, latte macchiato, cappuccino+, cappuccino mix, hot milk, caffe latte, flat white, espresso macchiato, hot water
  • Extra Features: Bean grinder, automated grinds dispensing/tamping, milk steamer
  • Time to Heat: 40 seconds
  • Pressure Bars: 19
  • Dimensions: 9.3 x 16.9 x 13.7 inches

The Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Can brew full pots of coffee
  • Thermal milk carafe with auto-self-clean function
  • Easy to maintain
  • Makes standard coffee

The Cons:

4. Best Latte Machine for Beginners: Keurig K-Café Single Serve Coffee Latte & Cappuccino Maker

Keurig K-Cafe Single Serve Coffee Latte & Cappuccino Maker
Credit: Amazon

If you’re new to hand-crafted coffee drinks and want a latte machine without tons of bells and whistles, I recommend snagging the Keurig K-Café. It’s way more affordable than some of the high-end options available but doesn’t sacrifice functionality, making it the best coffee machine for lattes. I love that it comes with a milk frother that can work with either cold or warm milk, too.

Instead of having to grind beans, measure, and tamp them down, you can use your favorite K-Cup coffee or espresso pod or even a universal K-Cup filter with your favorite grinds. It’s not quite the same as a standard espresso, but there is a “shot” button that brews a more concentrated serving. You can also brew a regular coffee and craft a milky drink with that, instead. It’s the beginner, wallet-friendly version of the best automatic latte machine above.

The Specs:

  • Machine Type: Automatic
  • Brewing Functions: Coffee, latte, cappuccino, hot water
  • Extra Features: Milk frother (warm or cold)
  • Time to Heat: On demand
  • Pressure Bars: not applicable
  • Dimensions: 14.17 x 17.32 x 14.41 inches

The Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Good value
  • Easy to clean
  • Quick brewing
  • Good-quality froth

The Cons:

  • Some customers find the temperature not to be hot enough
  • Doesn’t make “real” espresso

5. Best Nespresso Machine for Lattes: Nespresso Gran Lattissima Original Espresso Machine by De’Longhi

Nespresso Gran Lattissima Original Espresso Machine by De'Longhi
Credit: Amazon

Nespresso is a favorite brand for at-home espresso drinkers. It’s no surprise, since the machines use convenient pre-packaged capsules and high pressure to make an espresso-like coffee that’s stronger than regular drip.

This model in particular has easy-to-use button controls and a built-in cleaning system that works between recipe preparations to keep the machine in great shape. It comes with a detachable milk frother that can be used for three settings (espresso macchiato, cappuccino, and latte macchiato), while the machine itself has two brewing functions, espresso and lungo. Plus, I love that the detachable milk frother is dishwasher-safe.

The Specs:

  • Machine Type: Automatic
  • Brewing Functions: Espresso, lungo
  • Extra Features: Milk frother, descaling arm
  • Time to Heat: 18 seconds or 33 seconds for milk beverages
  • Pressure Bars: 19
  • Dimensions: 7.9 x 14.4 x 10.8 inches

The Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Small
  • Simple, clean design
  • Adjustable drip tray for different cup sizes

The Cons:

  • May produce bitter espresso shots
  • Some customers find the temperature not to be hot enough

6. Best Budget Latte Machine: Mr. Coffee 4-Shot Steam Espresso, Cappuccino & Latte Maker

Mr. Coffee 4-Shot Steam Espresso, Cappuccino & Latte Maker
Credit: Walmart

This lower-priced option tops my list for budget-conscious aspiring-at-home baristas. Unlike a traditional pump espresso maker, this is a steam espresso maker, so it has fewer bars of pressure. Despite this, it makes dark, rich espresso — in fact, it can make up to four shots in one serving! It’s also great for making Cuban coffee, a type of strong, sweetened espresso.

With a super simple button interface, it’s also very easy to use. Plus, with its affordable price point, I love that it has a steaming arm for milk instead of a frother so you can get those foamy microbubbles.

The Specs:

  • Machine Type: Semi-automatic
  • Brewing Functions: One shot/two shot/four-shot espresso, cappuccino, latte
  • Extra Features: Milk frother
  • Time to Heat: Not stated
  • Pressure Bars: 1-3
  • Dimensions: 10.6 x 9.8 x 12.4 inches

The Pros:

  • Small
  • Easy to use
  • Good value
  • Affordable price point

The Cons:

  • Milk frother works best with 1% or skim milk

Other Latte Machines We Researched

Breville Bambino Plus

This semi-automatic espresso machine has a milk steamer that can be set for auto or manual operation. It takes just three seconds to heat up (crazy fast!), but the top temp is only 200°F, so it might not get hot enough for some espresso lovers. It may also be difficult to maintain this model long-term because replacement parts are often sold out and repairing the lightweight, plastic parts can be expensive or just plain pesky. The Breville Bambino Plus is available at Amazon for $499.95.

Calphalon Temp IQ with Steam Wand

When you need to get out the door quickly but can’t leave without your morning cappuccino (been there!), this machine has your back with a heat-up time of less than a minute. This one is slightly different from the others I reviewed because it has a dial interface, instead of quick and easy buttons or a touchscreen. Additionally, there are mixed reviews about the machine’s quality and drink temperature, so I didn’t want to recommend this as a top favorite. The Calphalon Temp IQ is available at Target for $349.99.

Keurig K-Latte Single Serve Coffee & Latte Maker

This is a pretty simple coffee and latte maker. Similar to the K-Café model we picked above, this model also uses K-Cup pods or a universal K-Cup filter. We like that the milk frother arm flips up when it’s not in use to save some space. However, the K-Latte model can only fill 6-, 8- or 10-ounce cups, whereas the K-Café can fill cups of up to 12 ounces. Some users have also reported performance issues, too. The Keurig K-Latte Single Serve Coffee and Latte Maker is available at Walmart for $127.72.

Mr. Coffee One-Touch CoffeeHouse+ Espresso, Cappuccino & Latte Maker

This semi-automatic espresso machine takes easy serving espresso (ESE) pods, which means it removes the guesswork out of grounds dosage and tamping. It makes one-shot and two-shot espressos with a large, 18-ounce removable milk frother for cappuccinos and lattes. People love how easy it is to use, but there are mixed opinions about temperature, performance, and quality. The Mr. Coffee One-Touch CoffeeHouse+ is available at Amazon for $349.99.

Ninja DualBrew Pro Specialty Coffee System

This Ninja model can produce different strengths of espresso-like brews and even works with K-Cup pods (it comes with the necessary adapter) or a standard filter for your favorite ground coffee. I like that it has a water reservoir that can be mounted on different parts of the machine, but there were a lot of complaints about residue build-up, which means you’ll have to clean it more often than your average home latte machine. The Ninja DualBrew Pro Specialty Coffee System is available at Target for $179.99.

Why You Can Trust Me

Hi! I’m Sommer, the founder of A Spicy Perspective. I’m a professional food writer, recipe developer, food stylist, and photographer, and have worked to create TONS of recipes over the years to share with my wonderful readers! I love cooking things that bring back happy memories from my past, and foods from places I’ve traveled. And if the perfect morning cappuccino doesn’t evoke memories of an Italian adventure, I don’t know what would!

I’m a big coffee fan, but I know that running out to your local coffee house every day can get pricey, and fast. Even if you’re an espresso-lover like me, I’ve found that you can make incredible lattes, cappuccinos, and other espresso-based drinks (like my 3-Ingredient Affogato Bourbon Shots!) right at home with the help of the best latte machines.

What to Consider Before Buying a Latte Machine

Before purchasing the best latte machine, you’ll want to consider some other factors, like the type of machine and features.

Machine type

Espresso shots are usually the basis of latte machines. Generally, there are four different types: manual, semi-automatic, automatic, and super-automatic.

  • Manual means that the person controls all parts of the brewing process, from grinding beans, dosing, and tamping the puck, to adding water and physically pulling a lever that “pulls” (a.k.a. makes) the shot.
  • Semi-automatic models mean the user is still responsible for grinding beans, dosing, and tamping, as well as controlling the water input for the pull. But instead of a lever, all they have to do is press a button to activate an internal pump that pushes the water through to pull the shot.
  • Automatic machines generally have reservoirs for water and are capable of managing that output and pull time based on whatever brewing function (latte, cappuccino, espresso, and so on) the user selects. These machines might require the user to grind, dose, and tamp, or they might use a pre-made pod or capsule.
  • A super-automatic machine does it all, from grinding the beans, to dosing and tamping them, to adding water and managing brewing time, and may even have a built-in spot to dispense of the used puck (espresso grounds) when the process is complete.

Brewing functions

A basic espresso machine will generally offer options for one or two shots, with some offering up to four shots in a single pull. However, latte machines take things a step further by offering different espresso-drink types, such as cappuccinos and lattes, which introduce milk into the recipe.

If you’re just looking to have a simple latte, make your own Cuban coffee, or enjoy a shot of espresso with dessert, a simple machine might be the way to go. But if you want variety to spice up your drink menu, keep an eye out for a latte machine that can do more (like the super automatics).

Milk frothing

You can’t have a latte machine without a milk steamer or frother. After all, the milk is what makes the drink! Milk frothers tend to create a thicker foam, whereas steamed milk will be finer and more delicate with a velvety texture. Some frothers have the ability to create hot and cold milk drinks. If you’re into iced lattes, that feature is something to consider.

Heating time

If you don’t necessarily need to worry about how long it takes to make a good espresso drink, the machine’s heating time may not be super important to you. However, if your morning routine is programmed down to the minute, you’ll likely want a machine that can heat up fast. . Not all machines do this at the same rate — some are much quicker or slower than others, with the average being around 1-2 minutes.

Pressure bars

The pressure-bars number represents the pressure that water is pushed through the espresso grinds, with nine bars being the ideal pressure, or at a pressure that is nine times that of the natural atmosphere, according to HomeGrounds.co. The higher the pressure, the faster espresso is extracted from the grounds. The recommended extraction time for espresso is between 25-30 seconds.

Some of the machines reviewed here have more bars. The reality is, most machines lose pressure between the pump and the group head, so while the process might start at 15 or 19 bars, you will actually brew at around nine bars.

Dimensions

There’s no magic number here other than to consider how much space you have on your counter for a latte machine. These can range in size from relatively small and portable to a massive fixture in your kitchen.

How to Use a Latte Machine

Caramel latte
Credit: A Spicy Perspective

How you use a latte machine largely depends on whether you’re using a semi-automatic, automatic, or super-automatic model. However, there are some basic steps that you’ll take:

1. If warranted, you’ll grind your espresso beans, measure a dose, tamp it down, and use water and pressure to pull an espresso shot. The process may vary based on what machine you’re using, so make sure to read through the instructions for your specific latte machine.

2. Steam or froth your milk.

3. Pour your espresso shot into your cup and follow it up with milk. If you want a flavored latte, you can even purchase yummy coffee syrups to sweeten your latte.

How to Make a Latte at Home Without a Machine

A latte is a beverage made with espresso and steamed milk with a little bit of foam. The ratio is approximately a third espresso and two-thirds steamed milk, topped with foam. If you don’t have a latte machine, or even an espresso machine, you can still make a latte at home.

The quickest way to do it is by brewing strong coffee by using less water than normal. While the coffee is brewing, heat up your favorite milk. You can do this by putting it in a mason jar and giving it a shake for an iced latte, or pouring some into a saucepan over the stovetop, warm it up, place it in an insulated bottle, and then give it a vigorous shake. You can also whisk the milk while it’s in the pan, but it won’t give you the same foamy texture you’ll get from shaking it up.

Once your milk is prepared, you can pour a small amount of your strong coffee into a mug or cup. Then top with double the amount of shaken milk and spoon any foam you have on top.

How to Clean a Latte Machine

Many of the fancier latte machines have built-in settings to clean the system between recipes to prevent clogs and calcium build-ups. However, any removable parts should be disassembled and either hand-washed or run through the dishwasher (check your owner’s manual). Keurig is one brand that doesn’t have self-cleaning features, so those machines need a little extra attention to make sure they’re in good shape.

The easiest way to clean a Keurig latte machine is to remove the water reservoir, lid, drip tray, and K-cup holder. There’s usually a filter inside the water reservoir, so you’ll want to remove it and set it aside while you hand wash all the other parts in warm, soapy water. Then rinse everything thoroughly and towel dry.

According to Keurig, descaling is also an important part of cleaning your brewer. This process removes calcium deposits, or scale, that can build up inside over time. Calcium and scale are non-toxic, but when left unattended, they can hinder your brewer’s performance.

Can You Make a Chai Latte with a Nespresso Machine?

You can definitely make a chai latte with a Nespresso machine with a little finessing. You’ll start by brewing the espresso shot of your choice. If you’re using a standard machine without a milk steamer or frother, you’ll have to heat the milk in a pan and give it a vigorous stir with a whisk.

Otherwise, you’ll use your Nespresso latte machine to heat and texturize the milk. Once your milk is warm, let a chai tea bag infuse in the milk for approximately five minutes. Put the espresso shot in a mug or glass, then pour the infused milk in (remove the tea bag, first!), and top with any foam you have.

Other Fondue Pots I Recommend

Dash Deluxe Stainless Steel Fondue Maker

The Dash Deluxe includes eight color-coded forks, convenient racks to minimize drips, and attachable ingredient cups. The nonstick stainless steel pot is easily removable and dishwasher-safe which simplifies cleaning. The two main drawbacks of this set are the chord is very short, and the ingredient cups, although handy, could be bigger. The Dash Deluxe Fondue Maker is available at Amazon for $59.99.

Staub Cast Iron Mini Fondue Set

The Staub mini fondue set could be worth considering if you’re looking for a more intimate fondue experience. Although it holds less than a quart, it’s the ideal size for two people and has a high-quality cast iron construction for stability. It’s worth noting that the flame may be vulnerable due to exposed sides, and it does have a higher price for a smaller item. The Staub Cast Iron Mini Fondue Set is available at Amazon for $134.95

Cuisinart 13-Piece Cast Iron Fondue Set

For a more traditional fondue experience, the Cuisinart Cast Iron Fondue Set is a charming choice. Its adorable 1.5-quart pot transitions from stovetop to base, kept warm by fire gel. The handles on each side of the pot are handy for safe and easy maneuvering, and the stunning red colorway adds a touch of elegance. While elegant, its small capacity limits it for larger gatherings, which is why it didn’t make it to my top picks. The Cuisinart 13-Piece Cast Iron Fondue Set is available at Amazon for $60.99

Nostalgia 1.5-Quart Stainless Steel Electric Fondue Pot

Priced just under $40, this budget-friendly fondue set is versatile for hors d’oeuvres, entrees, and desserts. The set features 6 color-coded fondue forks, a support ring, and a 1.5-quart electric fondue pot. While easy to clean with its stainless steel make, it lacks reliable temperature control, preventing it from making my best buys. The Nostalgia Electric Fondue Pot is available at Amazon for $29.99

What to Know About Fondue Pots

What to Consider Before Buying a Fondue Set:

Heating Source

Fondue pots can be powered by electricity, fuel gel, or tea lights. Choose the one that aligns with your preferences and available heat sources, keeping in mind that open flames may be too dangerous if you have young kids.

Size and Capacity

Consider the size of the pot based on the number of people you’ll be serving. A larger capacity is suitable for bigger gatherings, while a smaller one is ideal for intimate settings for two.

Material

Fondue pots come in various materials, including stainless steel, ceramic, and cast iron. Each material has its advantages. Stainless steel is durable and easy to clean, ceramic provides even heat distribution, and cast iron retains heat well but is heavier. If you want to cook your fondue in the same pot that you serve it in, you’ll want to take into account whether the fondue pot can be used on your stovetop.

Temperature Control

Electric fondue pots offer precise temperature control for a variety of different types of fondues. If you opt for a traditional-style fondue pot, you’ll want to invest in a thermometer to ensure that your ingredients stay heated to the desired level.

How to Use a Fondue Set:

How to use a fondue pot
Credit: A Spicy Perspective
  • Set Up the Fondue Pot: Place the fondue pot in the center of the table so that it’s within reach of guests. If you’re using liquid fuel, clear away any flammable objects before filling the burner. If you’re using an electric fondue pot, make sure that the cord can reach an electrical outlet and that it’s not in anyone’s way.
  • Prepare Ingredients: Cut items such as bread, apples, potatoes, or other vegetables into bite-sized pieces for easy dipping, and place them around the fondue pot.
  • Set the Temperature: The correct temperature for your fondue pot depends on what type of fondue you’re making. Chocolate fondue should be set to around 110°F, whereas oil for cooking meat fondue needs to be kept at approximately 325°F to properly cook the meat. Setting the temperature on an electric fondue pot is easy, as it usually requires just turning a dial. If you’re using a traditional fondue pot that’s heated with a sterno, you’ll want to prepare your fondue on the stovetop first so that you can bring it to the correct temperature before transferring it to the fondue pot.
  • Dip and Enjoy: Provide long-handled fondue forks for guests to spear and dip their chosen items into the warm mixture. Keep in mind that any foods for dipping should not be left out for longer than two hours, and if you’re serving any meat or seafood, they should be presented in separate shallow bowls on beds of ice so they stay safely chilled.
  • Monitor Temperature: Keep an eye on the temperature throughout the fondue experience, and adjust the heat if needed, either by turning up the dial on your electric fondue pot, or increasing the flame on your gel fuel. Make sure to maintain a proper temperature so that your fondue doesn’t cool down and start to congeal or harden.
  • End of Service: Once the fondue experience is complete, turn off the heat source and let the fondue pot cool completely. Clean the fondue pot according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the Best Cheese for a Fondue Pot?

The best cheese for a fondue pot is a combination of melting cheeses that blend well to create a smooth and flavorful fondue. Traditional Swiss and French recipes often use a mixture of Gruyère and Emmental, which complement each other in terms of flavor and melting properties. Other types of cheese you can use include Comté, Fontina, Raclette, Appenzeller, cheddar, Swiss, and Monterey Jack.

What’s the Best Chocolate for a Fondue Pot?

The best chocolate for a fondue pot is high-quality chocolate with a good balance of sweetness and richness. Opt for chocolate with at least 60-70% cocoa content for depth of flavor. Dark chocolate varieties, such as semi-sweet or bittersweet, are popular choices as they melt smoothly and offer a more sophisticated taste. You can also experiment with milk chocolate or a combination of dark and milk chocolates to achieve the desired sweetness level.

Can You Make Fondue in a Crock Pot?

While it’s possible to make fondue in a crockpot, using a dedicated fondue pot is highly recommended for the best results—plus it looks better for serving! If you’re not quite ready to invest in a fondue pot, you can make it in your crock pot by mixing all the ingredients together, cooking it on high, and then reducing the temperature to the “keep warm” setting for serving. Be sure to stir it a few times to ensure that the bottom doesn’t get burned!

Candy thermometers give bakers the ability to continually monitor the temperatures of their candy concoctions. This level of precision is necessary to create perfectly crunchy peanut brittle, smooth caramel, fluffy divinity, rich fudge, and more. The best candy thermometers attach securely to your pan so your hands stay far away from your boiling candy, provide accurate temperature reads, have an easy-to-read display, and are simple to clean.

Candy thermometers are also important for safety: “They stay in place when you are working with hot molten sugar – you don’t want to have any distractions,” says Sommer.

Sommer and I took these factors into account and also leaned on her recipe-developing expertise to scour the market for the best candy thermometers. After researching the different types of candy thermometers available and reading hundreds of product reviews online, we came up with the four best candy thermometers.

Our top choices include Sommer’s favorite candy thermometer, the Taylor Classic Line Candy Thermometer, which is similar to the one she uses to make her Leche Quemada (AKA Mexican Burnt Milk Candy). Below you’ll find more details about our top picks, as well as important information on how to choose the right candy thermometer for you.

Our Top Picks:

1. Sommer’s Top Pick: Taylor Classic Line Candy Thermometer – $8.50 at Walmart

2. Best Digital Candy Thermometer: ThermoPro TP511 Digital Candy Thermometer – $26.99 at Amazon

Reviews of The Best Candy Thermometers

1. Sommer’s Top Pick: Taylor Classic Line Candy Thermometer

Taylor candy thermometer

Whether she’s making bacon peanut pecan brittle or maple walnut fudge, Sommer uses this style of candy thermometer to ensure that her candy desserts turn out just right. The Taylor Classic Line Candy Thermometer is easy to use, affordable, and designed to generate accurate temperature readings.

The thermometer can read temperatures up to 400 degrees F, and comes with an adjustable clip that you can attach to your pot. This clip allows you to monitor the temperature of your candy hands-free and ensures that the tip of the thermometer doesn’t touch the bottom of the pot (this leads to an inaccurate reading).

It also comes with a storage sleeve that features a temperature guide listing all of the temperature ranges ideal for making candy and various deep-fried foods. The Taylor Classic Line Candy Thermometer is also built to last; it’s made of tempered glass, which is four times stronger than ordinary glass.

What Sommer Says:

“I’ve had my candy thermometer for 10+ years. The numbers are large so it’s easy to read and has a good clip on the side.”

The Specs:

  • Type: Analog
  • Temperature range: 100-400 degrees F
  • Length: 12 inches

The Pros:

  • Small, easy to store
  • Comes with a cooking guide
  • Made of strong glass

The Cons:

  • Slower reading compared to digital versions
  • No protective handle
  • Print may be too small to read for some bakers
  • Tends to get condensation inside the glass

2. Best Digital Candy Thermometer: ThermoPro TP511 Digital Candy Thermometer

The best instant-read candy thermometer is a digital candy thermometer. These products offer lightning-speed temperature readings compared to their analog counterparts. This model from ThermoPro offers just that, as well as many other features that make it a solid candy thermometer.

The ThermoPro can read temperatures up to 572 degrees F, and features a relatively large display that has a backlight for easier viewing. What stands out about this candy thermometer the most is that it’s programmable. You can set your desired temperature ahead of time and once that temperature is reached, the screen will turn bright red, indicating doneness.

The ThermoPro TP511’s screen is also anti-vapor, so you don’t need to worry about the display ever getting fogged up (a common problem with candy thermometers). You can easily adjust the thermometer with the included pan clip or the rotating temperature head, and if the temperature ever seems off or goes a little haywire, there is a calibration function that allows you to easily reset the device.

The Specs:

  • Type: Digital
  • Temperature range: 50-572 degrees F
  • Length: 11.5 inches

The Pros:

  • Fast readings
  • Ability to program temperature
  • Anti-vapor and backlit display for easy viewing

The Cons:

  • Requires battery for operation
  • Pricier than analog models
  • No protective sleeve for storage

3. Best Candy Thermometer for Deep Frying: OXO Candy & Deep Fry Thermometer

OXO Deep Fry Thermometer
Credit: Amazon

OXO is known for its thoughtfully designed cooking tools, and this thermometer is no different. What makes this thermometer great for both candy-making and deep frying is its size. The thermometer is more than a foot long, measuring 16.5 inches exactly. These extra inches (many candy thermometers are 12 inches or less) matter, as the longer length makes it easier to avoid burns that can happen when handling hot oil and boiling candy concoctions.

Our pick for the best deep fry candy thermometer measures temperatures up to 400 degrees F and comes with a handy guide on the thermometer to help with cooking. These markers indicate the temperature ranges that are best for deep frying, chocolate melting, making caramel, and more. The thermometer also comes with an adjustable clip and a rounded foot that helps prevent scrapes as you maneuver the product in your pot.

The Specs:

  • Type: Analog
  • Temperature range: 100-400 degrees F
  • Length: 16.5 inches

The Pros:

  • Extra-long length
  • Guide for cooking on the thermometer
  • Anti-scrape foot

The Cons:

  • Doesn’t list all candy stages on the thermometer guide
  • Pricier compared to other analog models
  • Slower readings compared to digital counterparts

What Others Are Saying:

Food & Wine, The Spruce Eats, and Simply Recipes all recommend this candy thermometer, with Simply Recipes calling it “the best candy thermometer for deep frying.”

4. Best Infrared Candy Thermometer: Cuisinart Infrared Surface Thermometer

Cuisinart Infrared Surface Thermometer

This Cuisinart Infrared Surface Thermometer gives you the ability to get instant temperature reads of your caramel or fudge at a safe distance. These reads can be achieved thanks to the device’s laser technology, which can generate temperatures from objects as far as 12 inches away.

This effectively eliminates the need for bakers to get too close to their bubbling candy mixtures. The thermometer can read temperatures up to 716 degrees F, can be switched to Celsius with the push of a button, and has backlit display options for easier viewing.

This Cuisinart cooking tool also has an automatic shut-off and comes with its own battery. When you’re making candy with this, just make sure to aim in direct line with your candy mixture; angling the device may result in your pot getting a temperature read instead.

The Specs:

  • Type: Digital
  • Temperature range: Up to 716 degrees F
  • Weight: 0.5 pounds

The Pros:

  • No-contact candy thermometer
  • Lightweight
  • Multi-purpose

The Cons:

  • Requires batteries
  • Doesn’t monitor temperatures as consistently as a thermometer placed in a pot
  • May provide inaccurate reading if angled incorrectly.

Other Candy Thermometers We Researched

KitchenAid KQ907 Candy and Deep Fry Thermometer

This candy thermometer from KitchenAid has a lot going for it. It has a large display for easy reading, lists the candy-making stages on the thermometer, and has a silicone handle so you don’t feel the heat that is trapped in the stainless steel from candy-making. However, since this is designated as a deep-fry thermometer as well, it would be helpful if there were also labels on the thermometer that indicated the best temperatures for deep frying. The KitchenAid KQ907 Candy and Deep Fry Thermometer is available on Amazon for $19.99.

Williams-Sonoma Easy-Read Candy Thermometer

The Williams-Sonoma candy thermometer has an adjustable pot clip, can read temperatures up to 400 degrees F, has a protective handle, and was named the best candy thermometer by the Food Network. Although Williams-Sonoma brand-name cookware is lauded for its quality, without being able to see reviews of the product, we truly don’t know how it performs among the masses. The Williams Sonoma Easy-Read Candy Thermometer is available at Williams-Sonoma for $21.95.

Lightbeam Digital LCD Candy Spatula Thermometer

This two-in-one product is pretty incredible, giving bakers the ability to stir mixtures and get temperature reads at the same time. The thermometer can read temperatures between 58 and 572 degrees F and can be removed from the silicone spatula for easier cleaning. This is a cool invention, however, it does require batteries, which can become inconvenient. Plus, the reading may not be as accurate as a thermometer that has a completely exposed probe. The Lightbeam Digital LCD Candy Spatula Thermometer is available at Amazon for $16.49.

Williams-Sonoma Bluetooth Candy Thermometer

This is truly the candy thermometer of the future. Its Bluetooth capabilities mean that instead of inputting your desired temperature manually into the thermometer, you can do so remotely on your smartphone. It comes with a pot clip and contains a convenient alarm that sounds once candy or oil (this can also be used for deep frying) reaches your set temperature. Considering its high price, we’d love to see reviews from fellow bakers before we name it as one of our top picks. Williams-Sonoma Bluetooth Candy Thermometer is available at Williams-Sonoma for $64.95.

Taylor Candy/Deep Fry Thermometer

The Taylor Candy/Deep Fry Thermometer is the most popular candy thermometer on Amazon, boasting an average of 4.6 rating out of more than 11,000 ratings. The thermometer has a pot clip, lists the stages of candy making on the thermometer next to the temperatures, is big (which is great for safety and easy temperature reading), and can also be used for deep frying. Despite its popularity, and getting the stamp of approval from Food & Wine, the actual reviews of the product on Amazon were very mixed. The Taylor Candy/Deep Fry Thermometer is available on Amazon for $10.12.

We also took into account customer reviews as well as a thermometer’s temperature range, performance, ease of use, size, and features, such as if it had a pan clip or programmable settings.

What to Know About Candy Thermometers

Things to Consider When Shopping for a Candy Thermometer

Temperature Range

The temperature range for candy monitors is usually between 100 and 400 degrees F, although there are some models (usually digital) out there that can measure less than 100 degrees and beyond 500 degrees F. However, for candy making and deep frying, you don’t need a thermometer that generates temperatures beyond 400 degrees F (375 degrees F is the maximum temperature for deep frying; sugar burns past 350 degrees F).

Type

In general, there are two types of candy thermometers: analog and digital. Analog thermometers have temperatures listed on them and come with a clip that you can attach to the side of your pan. While inside the pan, the liquid encased in the glass tube on the thermometer rises to the temperature that your mixture is at, letting you know what stage you are at in the candy-making process.

Digital, on the other hand, provides an instant read and bigger display, plus some other bells and whistles such as backlights and programmable settings. Some digital candy thermometers come with pan clips, while others, such as infrared models, don’t, since they require you to hold the device over the candy to measure temperatures. Note: Analog models are usually priced much less than their digital counterparts.

Display

Display is important. If you can’t easily see the temperatures, you run the risk of ruining your candy. The best display is based on your personal preferences. If you don’t want to get your face too close to your candy concoction or are near-sighted, you’ll be better off with a digital thermometer, which usually has a large display and backlight for easier viewing. But that doesn’t mean that analog thermometers have tiny text; Sommer says the temperatures on her analog candy thermometer are big and easy for her to read.

Can I Use a Meat Thermometer for Candy?

You can, but you may get a different experience because meat thermometers weren’t designed for making candy. And since candy-making requires the utmost precision, using a tool that wasn’t made for making candy means that the margin for error is increased. This could result in your batch not meeting its full potential, or worse, getting ruined. Meat thermometers are also shorter and don’t come with a pan clip, so not only are you more likely to get burned from getting too close to your candy mixture, but having to constantly insert the meat thermometer into your pot will just get annoying.

If you’re making something that requires a candy thermometer, but you didn’t know that before starting the recipe, using a meat thermometer in a pinch will do just fine. But if you plan on making peanut brittle, caramel, or fudge even semi-regularly, it’s worth it to invest in a candy thermometer, which is usually the same price, or less, than your average meat thermometer.

Can I Use a Candy Thermometer for Oil?:

Yes! Like candy making, there is a level of precision needed for making delicious, deep-fried foods, such as Sommer’s Best Southern Fried Okra. Optimal temperatures for deep frying are between 325 to 375 degrees F. Candy thermometers allow you to closely monitor the temperatures of your oil in addition to keeping you far away from the scalding hot liquid as it cooks. The directions for using the thermometer for deep frying are the same for candy making: put the thermometer in the oil before you turn on the heat, and make sure the tip doesn’t touch the bottom of the pot for the most accurate reading.

How to Use a Candy Thermometer:

The best candy thermometers
Credit: A Spicy Perspective

Candy thermometers are incredibly simple to use. Before you do anything, start by checking that your thermometer’s temperature reading is accurate. A common complaint we found in candy thermometer reviews is that temperature readings can be wrong. You can check this by boiling a pot of water. If the temperature registers at 212 degrees (water’s boiling point) and stays there, then your thermometer is accurate.

After you’ve done that, insert the candy thermometer into the pot before adding your ingredients. Initially and throughout the candy-making process, you want to make sure your thermometer is never touching the bottom of the pot. This results in an inaccurate reading, as the candy thermometer measures the temperature of the bottom of the pot instead of the mixture. From there, you’ll start to get readings on your candy thermometer.

Instructions for analog and digital models with a probe are usually the same, though some may vary depending on your digital model. If you are able to program your desired temperature, do that before you put your thermometer into your pot. Infrared models usually just require you to turn on the device, aim, and it reads temperature immediately.

After you’ve finished making your candy, Sommer suggests waiting until your thermometer cools, then sticking the part of the thermometer with stuck-on sugar into a warm glass of water and waiting until that dissolves. However, check your manufacturer’s instructions before doing this, as some thermometers can get ruined if you immerse any part of it in water.

How to Read a Candy Thermometer:

There are six stages to candy making: thread stage (230-234 degrees F), soft-ball stage (234-241 degrees F), firm stage (242 to 248 degrees F), hard-ball stage (250-266 degrees F), soft-crack stage (270-289 degrees F), and hard-crack stage (295-309 degrees F). There are some candy thermometers that have the stages listed on the product, but in the absence of that guide, the only other way to be sure is to know the temperature range of the stages. You can make syrup during the thread stage, fudge and fondant during the softball stage, caramel during the firm stage, marshmallows during the hardball stage, toffee during the soft crack stage, and peanut brittle during the hard crack stage.
